Generation No. 2

2. Martin Robert Ludwig Runge, born October 15, 1894 in Hanover Township, Crawford County, Iowa; died August 08, 1986 in Denison, Crawford County, Iowa. He was the son of 4. Carl August Wilhelm Runge and 5. Pauline Louise Dicke. He married 3. Ella Anna Christiansen July 11, 1924 in Hanover Township (Parsonage of St. Paul's Lutheran Church), IA.

Editor's Note: Jerry Froehlich adds that Denison is the county seat of Crawford County. The generation 2 Runges rarely, if ever went to Denison—nearest towns were Ricketts (about 2 miles) and Charter Oak (about 5 miles) where Uncle Paul Fiene and Tante Julie Agusta (Dicke) Fiene lived. I believe Martin worked in the bank in Ricketts. . . . . Lydia, Martin, Ester, Alfred & Paula (see below) were probably all born in Hanover Township (not Denison, as previously noted). . . . Tante is German for aunt.

3. Ella Anna Christiansen, born May 25, 1905 in Dow City, Crawford, IA; died September 01, 1978 in Denison, Crawford County, Iowa. She was the daughter of 6. Marcus Bonnichsen Christiansen and 7. Marie Lochmiller.

Generation No. 3

4. Carl August Wilhelm Runge, born December 04, 1859 in Seltz, Kreis Ückermünde, Pomerania, Germany; died September 30, 1956 in Sioux City, Iowa. He was the son of 8. Friederich Runge and 9. Friedericka Bietz. He married 5. Pauline Louise Dicke October 12, 1883 in Town Washington, Shawano County, Wisconsin.

Editor's Note: Jerry Froehlich adds that "Town" is the Wisconsin vernacular for "township." Town Washington is just east of Shawano (county seat of Shawano County), incorporated villages of Town Washington are Bonduel and Cecil.
Selz is a village in Vorpommern close to border of Mecklenburg, about 75 miles north of Berlin. Selz is pronounced "Seltz" (in German). Ückermünde is a district (Kreis) on eastern edge of Vorpommern near present Polish border, not far from the Baltic (most of Pomerania went to Poland in 1945, only a small piece, Vorpommern, is still part of Germany). Münde is the German word for a salt marsh or a delta. Ückermünde is the Oder River delta as it flows into the Baltic. Barow is at the far western edge of Ückermünde. Vorpommern, "Vor" in German is pronounced "for," same as English in foretell, foresee, means the start of Pomerania.

5. Pauline Louise Dicke, born April 27, 1860 in Town Theresa, Dodge County, Wisconsin; died February 23, 1955 in Sioux City, IA. She was the daughter of 10. Peter Heinrich Dicke and 11. Anna Katherine Bezler Dicke.

Editor's Note: Nori Muster adds that Rev. Carl Runge was born in Germany, earned his divinity degree, then came to America; Pauline was born in Wisconsin after her parents immigrated. Rev. Runge was approximately one year older than Pauline.
Pauline and Rev. Runge met in Bonduel and were married when they were 23 and 24. Sometime after that they moved to Hanover Township where Rev. Runge had his church and parsonage, and where they raised their family.
They both had long lives - Pauline lived to age 95 and Rev. Runge lived to age 97. They spent their last years in Sioux City, Iowa.
